Brandy

Brandy is a generic term which describes a spirit distilled from a fruit. In most cases this is grapes but in the case of calvados it is apples, which are first made into a cidre. There are many different brandies including grape brandy, marc and grappa and of course the great Spanish Brandies which are produced in the Solera style, where casks are topped up with newer spirit. These very fine brandies can therefore rarely be aged, the only time an age can be quoted is when no further topping up occurs. Spanish Brandies are also aged in old sherry casks thus producing a sweetness not found in other brandies. Brandy is produced in many different countries including America, Australia, Argentina and South Africa. Each has their own styles and methods since there are few, if any, laws to govern their production.

Not to be confused with much later, unremarkable brandies bottled after 1983, although much of the packaging is similar.
