About Hermitage Chez Richon

Tremendous complexity and flavour. These complex cognacs are distilled on small narrow stills enabling greater fruitiness from the wines to be found in the cognac. Flavours of pineapple syrup, walnuts and spices are all in abundance

Details

Cognac Masters 2010 - Master Award

This cognac was specially prepared by the company's owner and is regarded as one of the finest from this small producer. There is a distinctive pineapple aroma and a richer pineapple, walnut and medlar fruit complexity on the palate. It's intense flavour is enhanced by the slightly higher strength. Very long on the palate.

Additional Information

Aroma Pineapple and roasted walnuts
Distillation Small estate and well known family in the area. Distillation is on a small still with a relatively straight sided still head which minimizes rectification. This together with fairly heavy lees enables maximum wine flavours. The producer does not have to rely on negociant sales so has been able to concentrate on his own style
Flavour This is a complex cognac with many quite powerful flavours. Predominantly, pineapple syrup and roasted walnuts but there are also some spicy and oaky tones
Grape Variety Mainly Ugni Blanc but some Folle Blanche is also known to be available
Reduction and Strength Ageing in Grande Champagne is usually the slowest of all the crus allowing the spirit to be in contact with the wood for the greatest period. Some water is added but no additives are used, the water is added very slowly and aged before bottling
Viticulture The land around Chez Richon is flatter than closer to Segonzac, but the soil is still predominantly very porous Coniacian chalk and the roots go down deep
