Tariffs

TariffsWe waited with bated breath as the final details of the UK’s Brexit deal were agreed in December and were pleased to learn that there will be no tariffs due on the importation of French brandies to the UK from 1 January 2021.  Adjustments will need to be made by all, to embed the paperwork now required, but that’s to be expected with such an upheaval.  In the US however, the situation is not so rosy as although it is hoped that the tariff on scotch whisky will be lifted, an EU retaliatory 25% tariff has been placed on imports of cognac and brandy from 12 January 2021.

Happy New Year 2021

2021It is not the New Year 2021 many of us had hoped for but let’s hope there are improvements later in the year.  We would like to thank all of our customers for their business to date and hope they stay safe and well during the forthcoming months.

Brexit brought many challenges at the end of last year.  We have found that there are now some shortages in supply which, along with a poor exchange rate, means that reluctantly, we will have to increase our prices from 1 February.

So …. if you have gifts to buy, or just feel the need to treat yourself, don’t hang about, the New Year is well and truly upon us!

‘Brexit’ and the Drinks Industry

europeSince Great Britain voted to leave the EU, about a year ago, the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has had much to say about it. They are concerned that if frictionless borders are not put in place, laborious customs checks will severely delay the importation of wine and spirits and lead to a resurgence in alcohol smugglers. More recently, the CEO said that it was essential the UK secure transitional measures that would allow sufficient time for “necessary systems to be introduced and properly tested” and avoid the UK falling off a cliff without a deal. The UK is the world’s second largest imported wine market and the largest spirits exporter so the Brexit challenge is as acute for the UK as it is for other European countries. On a more positive note, the UK ferry industry hopes that Brexit will provide a welcome boon for the travel retail sector, paving the way for the return of duty-free shopping on board for the first time in 20 years.

UK Referendum Result – Brexit

The United Kingdom’sUK Referendum Result decision to ‘brexit’ the European Union will cause some difficulties in the industry with prices, especially at the lower end of the market where margins are narrow. Certainly though, for the time being we will not be increasing prices until the need to do so becomes critical. Hermitage Cognacs are already highly competitive and offer huge advantages on a like for like basis, particularly in terms of price and quality.
